Your exam schedule
A personalized version of your exam schedule can be accessed in your account under the heading 'Exam Schedule'. Please note, you may need to enable pop-ups to view the schedule.
The registrar's office provides the most up-to-date final examination information for each term. The exam schedule will be updated to reflect any changes. Please check your schedule again in Self-Service prior to the start of exams to confirm your exam dates, times, and locations.
Exam procedures and regulations
Final exams follow strict procedures and regulations. Students should familiarize themselves with the rules to be successful and avoid unnecessary stress. Students who do not follow exam rules may be investigated for an academic integrity violation.
Before the Exam
- Double check your exam time and location in Self-Service.
- Plan to arrive early and leave extra time for travel delays. You are advised to arrive 20 minutes before the scheduled exam time.
- Bring your Mount Allison student ID card.
- Review instructions from your course instructor about authorized items permitted at the exam.
- Plan accordingly – all unauthorized personal belongings must be contained in a bag that will fit under your exam chair.
- If you must have food in the exam room, plan for nut-free, odor-free and silent snacks.
Arriving, Beginning & Concluding the Exam
- Students are reminded to use the washroom before the exam begins.
- Only students enrolled in a course are eligible to sit for an exam unless prior instructor approval has been obtained.
- Students are expected to arrive on time and will be admitted to the exam room approximately ten minutes in advance of the exam start time.
- Students will not be admitted to the exam room 30 minutes after the beginning of the examination. There shall be no extension of time for students who arrive late.
- Official photo identification (preferably student ID or government-issued ID such as a driver’s license) is required for all students writing exams. The ID is to be placed on the desk, clearly visible to the invigilator.
- Students must sign an exam register at the start of the exam period and are not permitted to leave the exam room until after they have done so.
- Students are not allowed to leave the exam room during the first 30 minutes of the exam.
- Students are not allowed to leave the exam room during the last 15 minutes of the exam.
- Failure to cease writing at the conclusion of the exam may be considered a violation of exam regulations.
Authorized Aids & Student Belongings
- Personal items are not to be left in hallways, rooms or lobby areas adjacent to the exam room.
- All outerwear including vests, coats and jackets (as well as any other clothing with oversized pockets) should be placed on the back of the chair. Students are not allowed to reach into pockets or any other part of outerwear during the exam.
- Students should minimize personal belongings brought into the exam room. All hats and caps, notes and books, pencil cases and pouches, turned-off cell phones, laptops, wearable technology, purses and other unauthorized materials or aids must be contained inside a knapsack or bag, which should be closed securely and placed under the chair. Students are not permitted to touch knapsacks or bags (or the contents of) during the exam.
- Devices must be powered off. The use of wearable technology, as well as communication, electronic, and sound recording devices is prohibited unless they are a specific component of the exam as defined by the instructor.
- Only authorized materials or aids may be used by students during the writing of an exam.
- Unauthorized materials include, but are not limited to, pencil cases / pouches, books, textbooks (unless expressly permitted by the course instructor), class notes, and aid sheets (unless expressly permitted by the course instructor). Unauthorized electronic devices include, but are not limited to, mobile phones, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth enabled devices, laptops, tablets, MP3 players, iPods, PDAs, pagers, CD players, mini disc players, smart watches, smart glasses, wearable technology, spy technology, ear buds, electronic dictionaries (unless expressly permitted by the course instructor), and programmable / non-programmable calculators (unless expressly permitted by the course instructor).
- All authorized equipment, material or aids required to write the exam must be placed on the exam desk and kept in view during the exam (pen, pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener, and if specifically permitted, electronic calculator or aid/note sheet). Any watches or timepieces must be placed on the exam desk. Pencil cases are not permitted at exam desks.
- Material or aids placed on the desk may be inspected or searched by invigilators.
- The floor around the exam desk must be kept clean and clear. No loose items or papers can be left on the floor.
Washroom Use During the Exam
- Students are reminded to use the washroom before the exam begins.
- Except for necessary washroom use or urgent health issues, students are not permitted to leave the exam room.
- No materials, aids, electronic or communication devices should be carried in or out of the exam room. Invigilators may ask students about items in their possession.
- Students who need to use washroom facilities during the exam are to inform an invigilator before leaving the room.
- Students are required to sign out noting their full name, student ID number, course, date, seating row, and time out/in.
- Students must use the designated washrooms in the vicinity of the exam room.
- Only one student may use the washroom at a time.
- Students may be escorted to the washroom.
Academic Integrity
- All instances of academic dishonesty during examinations are subject to the procedures and sanctions contained in academic calendar and Policy 5500 – Academic Integrity Policy.
- Students are expected to write their examinations in an honest and straightforward manner.
- Students found in possession of unauthorized aids may be subject to disciplinary action. All materials or equipment are subject to inspection.
- Students may not provide or obtain assistance from another student during the exam.
- Students may not communicate in any manner with any person other than course instructors, exam invigilators or other designated officials during the exam.
- Student caught talking or being disruptive during an exam may be asked to move to a different seat, or to stop writing and leave the exam room.
- Students may not copy, photograph, or otherwise capture any exam papers or materials.
- Students are not permitted to write on any paper except for the exam booklets and papers provided to them.
- Students should report possible instances of academic integrity violations to an invigilator.
Exam accommodations
Through the Meighen Centre and International Centre
Please request special academic accommodations well in advance.
- Meighen Centre students may request academic accommodations for exams. Options include extra time, a quiet room, reader service, etc.
- Eligible international students who are non-native English speakers may apply to receive final exam accommodations such as extra time and/or the use of a dictionary.
Illness or compassionate reasons
Exam accommodations may be granted in exceptional circumstances. If a student cannot write their final exam as scheduled due to illness or for compassionate reasons, an exam accommodation may be granted.
To apply, you must complete the exam accommodation request form (at least 24 hours in advance whenever possible) and will be asked to provide original documentation as needed to support your application. See .
In what cases are exam accommodations granted?
Exam accommodations may be granted in exceptional circumstances. These may include:
- illness
- death/funeral of a family member
- scheduled surgery or specialized medical appointment
- car accident/breakdown
- severe weather
- religious observance
Please note that holiday and travel arrangements, work/sport/social commitments, misreading the schedule, failure to arrange transportation, arriving late to or sleeping through the exam, etc. are not grounds to request exam accommodations through the registrar’s office. In these instances, students may appeal directly to the instructor and accommodations may be granted at the instructor’s discretion.
What forms of accommodations are available?
The course instructor will decide the appropriate accommodation. This may include:
- rescheduling the exam during the exam period
- rescheduling the exam after the exam period (deferred exam)
- a take-home exam
- an essay or assignment in lieu of the exam
- a final grade based on completed in-course work
How will I be informed if an accommodation is granted?
If your exam has been rescheduled, you will be notified by the registrar’s office by e-mail. Please note that if you do not write your exam as scheduled, a grade of ‘0’ will be submitted for the exam.
If you have not received a response from the registrar’s office by the time your exam is scheduled, you should plan to write your exam as originally scheduled unless your circumstances prevent you from writing.
Important note: any concerns or allegations of misrepresentation of personal circumstances will be deemed to constitute an allegation of academic dishonesty and may be referred to the Academic Integrity Officer.
Other exams
Special exams
Students with fourth-year standing can apply for a special exam if all the following apply:
- the student has failed the course three times
- the course is required for the student’s degree program
- there is no other option to fulfill the degree requirement
How to apply for a special exam
To apply for a special exam, students must submit the special exam application form to the registrar's office. A $50 application fee applies. The application must be approved by the registrar in consultation with the student, instructor, and the relevant academic dean.
The results of a special exam will be recorded as 'pass' or 'fail' unless otherwise decided by the registrar.
Exam invigilation
Exam invigilation for non-Mount Allison courses is offered during office hours by appointment only. Requests for invigilation must be received at least two weeks prior to the expected exam date. This service is only available to current Mount Allison students.
Details
The cost for invigilation services is $50 per exam.
You must arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled exam time and report to the service counter at the registrar’s office (2nd floor of the Wallace McCain Student Centre.) Payment is due before you write your exam. Payment can be made by credit card, debit, cash, or cheque.
