The $40,000 accessibility grant will be used to install ACA-compliant door-opening mechanisms in several areas on campus. This important project will help make campus more accessible — supporting the University’s mission to remove barriers and align with accessibility goals outlined in the Strategic Plan — Broad Minds. “The support from the Rick Hansen Foundation, RBC, and the RBC Foundation accelerates important work to improve accessibility across our campus,” says President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ian Sutherland. “Accessibility is a key part of Mount Allison’s mission and guides how we approach campus development and renewal. This funding allows us to move forward quickly on upgrades that will make a meaningful difference on our campus.”

About 64% of Canadians either have a disability or care for someone with a disability and that number continues to grow as our population ages. People with disabilities continue to face significant barriers to participation in everyday life, from playgrounds and parks to trails, libraries, and recreation centres.
The RBC Barrier Buster Grants Program was created in honour of the 40th anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Man In Motion World Tour, to assist municipalities, schools and community groups across the country with accessibility improvement projects that help remove barriers for people of all ages and abilities. Installation of the new door-opening mechanisms is expected to be completed this summer.
“Accessibility is about more than removing barriers, it's about opening doors to opportunity so that every Canadian can contribute and participate fully,” says Rick Hansen, Founder of the Rick Hansen Foundation.
The RBC Barrier Buster Grants Program is possible thanks to the generous support of RBC, RBC Foundation as well as National Partners McDonalds, Permobil Foundation, and Toyota Canada and National Media Partners Corus Entertainment, Pattison Outdoor Advertising, and The Globe and Mail.
