Position description
Reporting to the Network Manager, the System Administrator is part of a team responsible for the maintenance of the University’s networked systems including the evaluation, installation and maintenance of systems and software; troubleshooting network software and hardware; configuration and maintenance of network devices (servers, routers, switches, wireless); and assisting the Network Manager and providing back-up as required. Works with external customers and partners to manage and maintain shared infrastructure systems. Responsibilities will also include working with faculty to provide application support and software installation.
Position Responsibilities
- Working with network manager to plan, design and evaluate new projects and modifications to existing systems.
- Primary responsibility for installation and maintenance of virtual machine infrastructure software components and cloud computing environments.
- Shared responsibility for installation and maintenance of virtual machine infrastructure hardware and Storage Area Network (SAN) components
- Installation, maintenance, and support of servers, relational database systems, and applications. Develop new skills for new projects and systems (e.g. Virtualization, Storage Area Network, ERP system components, Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, cloud computing)
- Primary responsibility for many mission-critical university systems (e.g. E-Mail, ERP systems, Web services, SharePoint, identity management systems, and other applications).
- Windows, Linux, and UNIX server operating systems and software
- Working with external partner organizations to implement, manage, and maintain shared infrastructure systems and services.
- Working with Computing Services staff, end users, and external partners to implement new systems and applications.
- Provide support to Computing Services Applications and User Services staff.
- Network devices (servers, routers, switches, wireless)
- Provide advice, mentorship, and training to other members of the Operations team.
- Providing back-up for other members of the Operations team.
- Other duties as assigned by the Network Manager
Key Relationships and Contacts
- Work collaboratively with staff on projects and provide system support to other Computing Services staff and end users.
- Provide technology support for faculty research projects.
- Work with internal and external clients, partner institutions, and industry organizations on joint projects (includes work at client and partner sites).
- Work with vendors and consultants for installation and maintenance of infrastructure systems and applications.
- Work with staff at external clients to provide ERP system support.
- Work with partner institution staff to support shared security management and monitoring systems.
Accountability, Decision Making, and Problem Solving
- Primary responsibility for all mission-critical university systems. Decision-making and the impact of errors is more significant for these systems.
- Administrative access to the university’s (and clients’ and partners’) computing infrastructure. Decisions and mistakes will impact the operation of these institutions (e.g. recruitment and registration and procedures, financial systems, access to course materials, online donations, e-mail, web sites, etc.)
- Work objectives are determined in conjunction with the supervisor; there is considerable latitude with respect to how work is performed.
- Responsibility for and access to systems and applications that store and process sensitive university information including personal (student, alumni, etc.), financial, and academic (grades).
- Responsibility for security and protection of systems, applications and data.
- Planning, analysis, problem solving, and creativity is required for most tasks.
Other:
- Works carefully in highly controlled secure environments. Control and monitor access by vendors and consultants.
- Schedule and hours are normally Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30, but may occasionally vary (e.g. off-hours maintenance, system emergencies).
- Continuing study is required to develop and maintain skills and knowledge. This includes formal training and self-study.
Qualifications/skills
- A University degree in Computer Science or a related field and three to five years of related experience, preferably in an educational setting.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Broad technical knowledge of servers, storage, network infrastructure and applications, preferably in a virtualized environment, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment are required.
- A demonstrated ability to develop new technical skills and become proficient with new products and technologies on an on-going basis is also required.
